Synod elected Archdeacon James Cowan as the deputy prolocutor for the new triennium.
Archdeacon Cowan, a parish priest for 20 years from the diocese of British Columbia and a co-chair of the joint Anglican Lutheran working group, was elected on the third ballot.
By the third ballot, Archdeacon Cowan was facing three other candidates: Rev. Larry Beardy (diocese of Keewatin), who came in second, Rev. Alan Perry (diocese of Montreal) and Rev. Philip Poole (diocese of Toronto).
The deputy prolocutor is an officer of synod, elected by from the orders of clergy and laity at each session, but may not be of the same order as the prolocutor.
Dorothy Davies-Flindall, a layperson from the diocese of Ontario, was elected the day before as prolocutor, who, next to the primate, is the senior officer of the General Synod.
Archdeacon Cowan has served at the local, diocesan and national levels of the church. Nationally, he has been a member of the General Synod a number of times and the faith, worship and ministry committee for six years.
