John George Hodgins (1821-1912) was born in Dublin, Ireland on August 12, 1821. He came to Canada in 1833, receiving his education at Victoria University, Cobourg in 1856 and his law degree from the University of Toronto, Toronto in 1860. Hodgins was called to the Ontario Bar in 1870. Prior to his educational upbringing, Hodgins entered the provincial Department of Education as a clerk in 1844 and rose to the position of Deputy Superintendent of Education under Egerton Ryerson in 1855, and later served as the Deputy Minister of Education in 1876. Hodgins edited the “Upper Canada Journal of Education” for 30 years and wrote many papers and books concerning education. He died in Toronto on December 23, 1912.
Fonds consist of 26 volumes arranged in chronological order of sermons, letters and various other printed material that pertain to the Anglican Church, in particular, the Diocese of Toronto.
