Biographical Sketch:

Arthur Sweatman (1834-1909), graduated from Christ’s College, Cambridge, 1859.  Ordained deacon in 1859 and priest in 1860.  Curate of Holy Trinity, Islington, England, 1859-1863 and curate at St. Stephen’s Canonbury, England, 1863-1865.  Founder of the Islington Youth’s Institute.  Headmaster of Hellmuth Boy’s College, London, Ontario, 1865-1871; rector of Grace Church, Brantford, Ont. (Huron), 1871-1876; priest in charge of the Parish of Woodstock, Ont. (Huron) 1876-1879.  Elected Bishop of Toronto and consecrated bishop, 1879.  Elected Metropolitan of Canada (sixth), Archbishop of Toronto (first) and elected primate of All Canada (third), 1907.  Died Sunday, January 24, 1909.

Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of correspondence to and from Bishop Sweatman.   A letter, dated Apr. 6, 1888, from Arthur Sweatman to Archdeacon Boddy, thanking him for a cheque received from the Ladies of Toronto to be used for his trip to England; and a folder of letters written to Sweatman from E.F. Lipsomb and his wife L.B. Lipscomb relating to the Chinese Mission in Victoria B.C.
