Biographical Sketch:

George Thorneloe (1848-1935) was born in Coventry, England and was educated at St. Peter’s Church, near Birkenhead, England and at the high school in Granby, Quebec.  He received a B.A. in 1872 and M.A. in 1877 from Bishops’ College, Quebec and was ordained deacon in 1874 and priest in 1875.  He was incumbent of Stanstead, Quebec (1874-1885), rector of Sherbrooke, Quebec (1885-1896) and consecrated Bishop of Algoma in 1897.  In 1915, he became Metropolitan of Ontario (Second) and Archbishop of Algoma (First).

Scope and Content:

Fonds consists of correspondence from the Archbishop of Canterbury dealing with a meeting of the Bishops of Canada (1908) and union with the Church of Rome (1923), correspondence from Dr. B.J. Kidd, Keble College, also concerning union, a photocopy of a letter from Mary Appleby about Peter T. Rowe, Bishop of Alaska.  Included is a sermon and comments on the question of a fixed Primatial See.
