Former residential school students and others attended the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Northern National Event in Inuvik, N.W.T., June 28 to July 1, 2011.
National Indigenous Anglican Bishop Mark MacDonald has noted that the Anglican Church of Canada is the most northern Anglican church in the world. The life and witness of our church has been shaped by the legacy of residential schools.
Five of the 14 Northwest Territories residential schools acknowledged in the Indian Residential Schools Settlement Agreement were run by the Anglican Church of Canada and the others were run by Catholic entities.
Anglican residential schools were largely for Inuit children and Catholic schools were for Dene children. The June 2011 event offered both churches an opportunity to visibly demonstrate their commitment to healing and reconciliation.

Anyone who has been affected by the Indian Residential Schools (IRS) legacy will have the opportunity to share their experiences during the TRC’s five-year mandate.
In Inuvik, the floor was given to survivors, intergenerational survivors, their families, former staff, government officials, and others affected by residential schools to share their experiences, safe in the knowledge that everything they said would be recorded, honoured, and preserved. The statements gathered at the event will hold their rightful place in the history of this country.
