The project will train aboriginal counsellors and therapists in an advanced method of trauma recovery. The end result of this project will be the existence of skilled facilitators who can provide an unlimited amount of advanced trauma recovery workshops for residential school survivors. It helped to bring families & community together and it reinforced traditional values of sharing, respect for one another and unity. History, cultural teachings and values were passed down orally from one generation the the next. Today this has not been happening. This project’s goals include restoration of traditional family & community connection; rebuilding the spiritual connections; opportunities for volunteerism with a focus on traditional family activities. This year the program will expand through a contact at Pikangikum First Nation. The youth and a mentor work and meet each day for social analysis around the causes of poverty and issues faced by people on social assistance and for reflection and prayer, cross-cultural exchanges. Northwest Region Metis Gathering of Survivors of Residential School System
Although residential schools were officially designed for First Nation people, it is widely known that a substantial number of Metis people in Manitoba attended residential schools. Like many of those who attended these institutions, they continue to suffer the effects of physical, sexual and cultural abuse. The Northwest Gathering of Survivors of Residential School in Dauphin will be the first such gathering for the Metis people in this region. The gathering will offer workshops that focus on the intergenerational impacts that still affect the Metis people. Hire a Family Support Worker for the community
The Family Support Worker will develop a needs assessment and a healing strategy for Missanabie Cree First Nations survivors of the residential school system. Upon the completion of the assessment, workshops will be designed based on the needs of the community. The Family Support Worker will conduct healing workshops, sharing circles, lead or assist in sweat lodges and work closely with individuals, and their families, that have been affected by the residential school system. Mending the Shattered Spirit
Stardale provides lifeskills, literacy, job training and advocacy to women living in poverty and abusive situations. Its primary program goals are to empower the lives of women, and through them empower their families and communities. In 1977, Stardale conducted a study to determine the needs of their clients, and developed its programming to those needs. However, the job market for these women was found to be limited due in part to the poor economic base in the province and to racism. Because of this, the organization established ‘Stardale Artistic Cooperative Limited’ where clients can work towards their healing while at the same time learning an artistic form and in this case – weaving. Thus the goal is to assist women to strive towards the goal of self-sufficiency with the assistance of education on business planning and marketing. (Diocese of Saskatchewan)

This pilot project to be implemented at the Sturgeon Lake First Nation will educate all community band members especially residential school survivors and the intergeneration to work on their issues in long-term counseling therapeutic sessions. Currently, they have a mental health therapist on reserve who only provides therapy for short-term crisis intervention provided by MSB-Health Canada. This grant will provide for travel costs to visit elders at their home who are unable to come to the Health Centre and the school where children/youth have issues and problems in relation to alcohol and drugs, suicide and anger, violence, pregnancy. Community Healing Gathering
Esgenoopetitj is currently engaged in a struggle with the Canadian government over fishing rights. Despite Supreme Court sanctions for First Nation access to the fishery, the federal government has responded to Esgenoopetitj fishing with force and violence. The residents have been working to respond and intervene to keep the community calm and productive in the midst of this challenge, but often feel isolated in its attempts to move forward to right relationships within the community, the government and the non-native communities. The project will address the crisis and the trauma brought about by confrontations with Canadian government officials and from the non-native communities. (Diocese of Fredericton)
