At the end of the first year of his primacy which he describes as a time of “enormous learning and significant change” Archbishop Andrew Hutchison, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, bids farewell to Archdeacon Jim Boyles who has served as the church’s General Secretary since 1993.
In a new segment of the webcast +Andrew: Conversations with the Primate, Archbishop Hutchison invites Archdeacon Boyles to reminisce about his time in office, marked by two successive strategic plans and the residential schools crisis that almost bankrupted General Synod before an agreement was negotiated with the federal government capping the church’s potential liability at $25 million.
For seven of his 12 years in office, Archdeacon Boyles says in the webcast, his workdays were dominated by the residential schools crisis which, he says, detracted from the main task of the General Synod staff which should be to nurture relationships between the General Synod and the church’s 30 dioceses.
Archdeacon Boyles officially retires at the end of June and a search process to find a successor is under way.
The Primate’s conversation with Archdeacon Boyles will be posted to the General Synod web site (www.anglican.ca) on Thursday, June 16.
