MinistryMatters, the magazine for Canadian Anglican leaders, has transformed into an online publication. The first fully online edition, Fall 2009, features the same assortment of ministry reflections and practical resources as the print version did, but with new elements of weekly columnists, a video feature, and the opportunity for readers to comment.
First launched in 1993, MinistryMatters has consistently been one of the most popular resources from General Synod’s communications department. It began as part of the Ministry Mailer, a package of General Synod news and resources, mailed out to all Canadian Anglican parishes. The first issue of the magazine featured an article on the Newfoundland fisheries crash and announced that voice mail had arrived at Church House.
Gradually MinistryMatters evolved to include long-form, meditative articles and a glossier, artistic format. The magazine was honoured by both the Canadian Church Press and the U.S.-based Associated Church Press. Published three times a year with a circulation of 3,000, the magazine offered a platform for talented writers and staff, including the Ven. Dr. Michael Thompson, poet Mel Malton, the Rev. Canon Maylanne Maybee (Partnerships), and Vianney (Sam) Carriere, the magazine’s founding editor.
In 2006, publication of MinistryMatters was suspended due to lack of funds, but the magazine returned for a fall 2008 edition on the Millennium Development Goals. After further budget cuts, the magazine moved to the present online format, where three issues will be published each year—in September, January, and May—and columns will be updated weekly.
Highlights from the Fall 2009 edition include a reflection on episcopal ministry from the Ven. Dr. Michael Thompson, a sketch of an unusual South African church by Dr. Stephen Martin, and a story of an adopted daughter by Catherine Pate.
Canadian Anglicans have always had lots to say about MinistryMatters, including the persistent suggestion that it be shared with a broader audience. Now online, the magazine’s interactive community can be expanded, as readers can comment on and immediately share what they find. So read, share, interact, and send in your feedback. MinistryMatters still aims to be a magazine by and for Canadian Anglican leaders.
