Administrative History
The Diocese of Keewatin was formed in 1902. It ceased to exist as of July 31, 2014 after the creation of the Indigenous Spiritual Ministry of Mishamikoweesh. The See City was Kenora, Ontario. The territory of the diocese included north western Ontario and Eastern Manitoba. Some parishes in the southern Ontario region were transferred to the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.
The Diocese of Keewatin had nine diocesan bishops: Joseph Lofthouse (1902-1920), Alfred Daniel Alexander Dewdney (1921-1938), Joseph Lofthouse (1938-1953), Harry Ernest Hives (1954-1969), Hugh Vernon Stiff (1969-1974), Hugh James Pearson Allan (1974-1991), Thomas William Ralph Collings (1991-1996), Gordon Walter Beardy (1996-2001), David Norman Ashdown (2002-2014) and two suffragan bishops: Gordon Walter Beardy (1993-1996) and Lydia Mamakwa (2010-2014). Lydia Mamakwa became the Bishop of Indigenous Spiritual Ministry of Mishamikoweesh in 2014.
Scope and Content
Diocese of Keewatin fonds consists of records created or accumulated by church members, bishops, clergy and staff of the Diocese of the Keewatin. The records cover contemporary and missionary work in north western Ontario and Eastern Manitoba and include missions that were originally administered by the Diocese of Rupert’s Land.
The Diocesan records are arranged in series which include bishops records, synod records, canon law records, financial records, sound recordings, graphic records, photographs, printed material, and collected material from various ministries. The records include clergy files and pension records, property and insurance records, financial reports and ledgers, parish histories, diocesan newspapers, etc.
Parish records include parish registers, financial information, architectural records, correspondence, and parish histories.
