Lutheran national meeting supported by Anglicans

From July 14 to 17, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Canada (ELCIC) will hold its 13th biennial national convention in Saskatoon, Sask. Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada, and other General Synod staff will support the ELCIC convention as it meets under the theme “Covenant People: In Mission for Others.”

Truth and Reconciliation website launched

The Anglican Church of Canada has launched a website of information and resources to support the work of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) on residential schools. The TRC has a mandate to learn and share the truth about what happened in residential schools and to assist all Canadians in the ongoing process of healing and reconciliation. Currently the TRC is hosting a Northern National Event in Inuvik, N.W.T., June 28 to July 1.

"Iron" Indigenous leader put relationships first

The June 16 retirement party for Donna Bomberry, Indigenous Ministries coordinator, was a family affair. Two large dream catchers, made by her mother Doris, hung above the crowd. Granddaughter Sophia, 3, ran, giggled, and cut the cake with a spoon. General Synod staff members—past and present—rose to pay tribute to the tall Cayuga woman who played a critical role in birthing a self-determining Indigenous church.

Financial officers meet, learn, go out to serve

Key financial and executive staff from Anglican dioceses across Canada met in Mississauga, Ont. June 10 to 12 to learn, network, and share feedback with General Synod. Through workshops, keynotes, and informal discussions, the 31 participants focused on how to improve their service to dioceses and build community among people in this ministry.

Governance Working Group analyzes Covenant

The Anglican Church of Canada’s Governance Working Group (GWG) has issued its report on the Anglican Covenant, a document that, if accepted, will define relations among the Anglican Communion’s 38 provinces. The full GWG report and executive summary are available online.

The Anglican Church of Canada has released a study guide to help parishes and dioceses consider the Anglican Covenant, a document that, if adopted, would define the relations among the provinces of the Anglican Communion. The material was prepared by the Anglican Communion Working Group, chaired by Bishop George Bruce.

That’s what happened to Cheryl Toth, a chaplain from Regina who attended Common Ground 2011, the National Ecumenical Youth Ministry Forum hosted by Huron University College’s Faculty of Theology in London, Ont., May 31 to June 5. The ties were strong, but not biological: Toth met four young adults from Toronto and Peterborough, Ont.

International exchanges bolster Anglican Communion

It’s Saturday at a busy Toronto market and among bushels of fresh asparagus and peppers, five Anglicans walk and chat together. The group includes a seminarian from Hong Kong and a businessman from Jamaica. They are being hosted by a family of three from Toronto, who are showing them downtown life for a day.

The Living the Marks of Mission campaign, which encourages Canadian Anglicans to think creatively about how they are living out their faith, has been launched with two new contests.

Church House library winding down operations

Library services at General Synod are beginning to wind down in anticipation of full closure on December 31, 2011. The first step will be on June 1, 2011, when Librarian Karen Evans will end her research and reference services. The General Synod Archives will now handle these queries.

Generous Anglicans support military chaplaincy

Canadian Anglicans have recently expressed their support for military chaplaincy through large and small gifts to the Bishop Ordinary Trust. In early May, Blake Goldring, chairman and CEO of AGF Management Ltd., gave $500,000 to the trust and thousands of Canadian Anglicans have donated more than $56,000 through the Silent Night Project, a collective video initiative in fall 2010.
