The Anglican Church of Canada remains deeply concerned about the children who died or went missing while attending residential schools. We are committed to working with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Indigenous communities to respond to TRC Calls to Action 71-76 regarding Missing Children and Burial Information in an effort to answer these critical questions:
- What are the names of students who died while in Indian residential schools?
- Who is missing from the records?
- How many Indian residential school students died?
- What was the cause of death?
- Where are they buried?
Listening to the experiences of former students and providing access to the church records held in the General Synod Archives, as well as diocesan archives across Canada, will be of key importance to finding the answers. The church continues to explore ways we can commemorate the missing children and to pursue how we can appropriately recognize the deaths that occurred while these students attended the Anglican residential schools.
